Due to length restrictions, many important technical contributions could not be mentioned at all – with sincere apologies to their authors. Though an attempt has been made to give an unbiased review of the most important work all over the world, a special emphasis on the efforts in the former Soviet Union, which had not been discussed much in literature, and in which the author of this text took an active part, seemed excusable. Another important qualification is that the author phased out his own research in the field about 10 years ago, so that the last parts of the notes, devoted to present-time and future work, should be viewed as not much more than remarks by an (interested) outsider. 2012 Elsevier B.V. Superconductor-Correlated Metal-Superconductor Josephson Junctions: An Optimized Class for High Speed Digital Electronics

It has long been conjectured that tuning the barrier of a Josephson junction to lie close to the metal-insulator transition will enhance the switching speed and provide optimal performance. We examine a new class of junctions, so-called SCmS junctions, where the barrier is a correlated metal (or insulator) close to the metal-insulator transition. We show that high products and moderate temperat...

Superconductor Digital-RF Receiver Systems

Digital superconductor electronics has been experiencing rapid maturation with the emergence of smaller-scale, lower-cost communications applications which became the major technology drivers. These applications are primarily in the area of wireless communications, radar, and surveillance as well as in imaging and sensor systems. In these areas, the fundamental advantages of superconductivity t...

7.8 History of Superconductor Analogtodigital Converters

An Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) is a mixed-signal electronic circuit that converts an electrical signal from the analog domain to the digital domain, typically providing N binary bits at the sampling frequency f s. The higher speed of superconducting circuits comparable to conventional circuits provided an initial interest in superconductor technology for ADC applications. One can find tec...

Transition from analogue-to-digital nuclear electronics for precise gamma radiation spectroscopy: advantages and limitations

In this paper, digital signal processing for precise gamma ray spectroscopy is presented. The basis of this system is a 14bit waveform digitizer which samples the output of pre-amplifier signals directly. The advantages and limitations of the digital spectrometer compared with analog spectrometer has been tested and analyzed from precise gamma ray spectroscopy point of view. The results shows t...

Deep sub-micron stud-via technology for superconductor VLSI circuits

A fabrication process has been developed for fully planarized Nb-based superconducting inter-layer connections (vias) with minimum size down to 250 nm for superconductor very large scale integrated (VLSI) circuits with 8 and 10 superconducting layers on 200-mm wafers. Instead of single Nb wiring layers, it utilizes Nb/Al/Nb trilayers for each wiring layer to form Nb pillars (studs) providing ve...
